All about Autonomic Response Testing

What is Autonomic Response Testing?

Autonomic Response Testing is a biofeedback technique that is used to investigate the root causes of poor health. Oftentimes, pain, discomfort, and poor health conditions can be the result of certain factors putting stress on the body in one or more ways. ART is a sort of enhanced physical exam that primarily uses changes in muscle tone as indicators of stress. What are the Steps?

Step 1: the procedure begins with the body being stressed using a number of different methods. Applied neuro-psychology is utilized to stress the body psychologically, and electromagnetic stress is also used. Structural stress is administered by squeezing particular organs or glands, placing stress on one or more joints, or pressing on a teacher area of the body. The patient is also stressed biochemically through the administration of medication orally, through an I.V., or via another route.

Step 2: after each stressor is effectively applied to the body, the test administrator will assess the reaction of the patient by one of a number of different means. These include muscle tests, an arm length test, applied kinesiology, HRV (heart rate variability), Kirlian photography, electro acupuncture, and a bi-digital O-ring test.

Step 3: after assessing the body’s reaction to each stressor, those reactions must now be interpreted. Those who practice Autonomic Response Testing generally all use the same guidelines when conducting this step. If a mild stressor is applied and there is a reaction, then it is safe to say the body is already under severe stress. If a severe stressor causes a reaction, with neither a mild or moderate stressor causing one before it, then the body is only under very mild stress. Lastly, moderate stressors causing reactions is indicative of the body being under moderate stress.

Step 4: this step involves using therapeutic modalities in attempt to ease or neutralize the stress. Any therapeutic modality that is found to help relieve the stress is immediately classified as an effective method in helping the body to cope with the stress that’s been discovered. If the item is non-allergenic and helpful in relieving the stress, it can be used as a treatment.

Determine How Healthy You Are

Things  to consider when determining how healthy you are.

  • How often do you get sick?  More than 2 times a year?
  • Is your sleep deep and refreshing?
  • Do you have chronic pain anywhere in the body?
  • How active are you?  Are you exercising at least 3 times a week ?
  • How often do you eat fried foods, sugar, packaged foods?
  • Do you eat vegetables, fish, organic foods?
  • Are you over or underweight?
  • How is your energy throughout the day?
  • Do you get headaches and how often?
  • Do you have any allergies to pollens, foods or other chemicals?
  • How is your appetite?  Do you get heartburn, constipation, bloating?
  • How is your mood?  Are you generally relaxed and content or do you spend much of your time angry, depressed or anxious
  • Is your libido good or decreased?
  • Do you have skin problems of eczema, acne, psoriasis?
  • Have you had any issues with infections of any kind?
  • How often do you meditate?

Eczema and Psoriasis

Key Pillars in the Treatment of Eczema and Psoriasis 

In my experience, I’ve found that to bring about any significant change in skin symptoms that various types of treatment are required. Skin problems  such as eczema and psoriasis can be difficult to treat and generally will not get better with “cook book” remedies and localized treatments alone. To see results, I recommend the following course of treatment.

  1. Test For Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are delayed reactions to specific foods that are triggered by IgG antibodies. 

Food sensitivities is an IgG reaction, the IgG antibodies attach themselves to the food antigen and create an antibody-antigen complex. Special cells called macrophages normally remove these complexes.  However, if they are present in large numbers and the reactive food is still being consumed, the macrophages can’t remove them quickly enough.  The food antigen-antibody complexes accumulate and are deposited in body tissues. Once in tissue, these complexes release inflammation causing chemicals, which may play a role in numerous diseases and conditions.

  1. Vitamin D Levels Via Blood Test

In Canada, a lack of direct sunlight in winter means we do not make vitamin D from October to April.

Only about 1/3 of Canadians have vitamin D levels* above 75 nmol/L, the minimum considered optimal for health.

A 2010 study estimated that 37,000 deaths could be prevented every year if the Canadian average vitamin D level* was 105 nmol/L.

Reasons for Vitamin D Deficiency:

Season or Latitude

The low angle of the sun in Canada means we cannot make vitamin D during the winter months.

Sunscreen Use 

SPF 15 sunscreen reduces D synthesis by 99%. 

Skin Colour

Dark skin has more of the pigment melanin, which can reduce vitamin D synthesis by up to 99%.


Vitamin D synthesis decreases by about 75% in a 70 year old.


Specific medications, like anti-rejection, anti-seizure and AIDS medicines can speed up the breakdown of vitamin D, resulting in low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Cholesterol-lowering medications are commonly prescribed for high cholesterol and heart disease.   Monitoring cholesterol is important, because having too-low cholesterol impairs the body’s ability to make vitamin D.

Support general digestive function with enzymes, probiotics, demulcents and cholagogues to heal the gut lining and reduce bacterial imbalance.

Pain and Injury Treatments

back pain Pain is a signal from the body that something is not right with our physiology. Treatments to mask or “numb” the pain are often detrimental to health and do little to speed recovery for most pain sufferers. The naturopathic approach has many integrative therapies that speed healing and serves to correct the underlying cause of pain.

Pain Neutralization Technique

A gentle use of local reflex points to turn off painful regions. This system is highly useful to improve muscle tension and significantly reduce pain without the use of any aggressive or invasive procedures. Chronic Neck and Back Pain

Medicine bottleStay Hydrated!  Water is easily the most vital nutrient your body needs. Poor hydration will lead to poor circulation, decreased wound repair and increased tendency to spasm. I recommend about a litre of pure water per 50 pounds of bodyweight per day.

Balance Your Blood Sugar! The vast majority of people have suboptimal blood sugar balance. Whenever blood sugar fluctuates it tends to increase blood levels of stress hormones. Elevated stress hormones slow down wound healing and increase perception of pain. Try to eat high quality protein and vegetables every 3 hours.

Avoid Unhealthy Foods! Unhealthy dietary choices increase the toxicity burden of the body while also encouraging inflammation and allergic activity. Fried food, sugar and/or a diet high in processed grains are a good idea to avoid.

Try Supplements! There exist an almost infinite variety of nutrients, herbs and nutra-ceuticals on the market that can benefit health and pain. The first step is to correct the most likely deficiencies that can compromise general health. A high quality multivitamin/multi-mineral and a good source of essential fatty acids is a great start. 

Take Epsom Salt Baths! Epsom salt baths relax muscle spasm and can also improve detoxification. Try this whenever you feel sore or tense.

Fix Your Ligaments! Ligaments are what hold your joints together. It is near impossible to be pain free when over-stretched ligaments from old injuries are present. I’ve found Prolotherapy to be an invaluable asset to treating most chronic pain.

Delete the Pain Reflexes!  Most people are unaware the role the nervous system plays with regard to pain, spasm and poor range of motion. I use a technique called “Pain Neutralization” to retrain reflexes to delete pain and improve range of motion of painful joints often instantly!

Align the Spine!  Segments in the neck and back need to move freely in the right way to allow for optimal motion, health and comfort. Spinal adjustments improve biomechanics, joint circulation, pain and overall wellbeing.

Pain can be due to muscular imbalances and poor flexibility that can be improved with a proper fitness regime.
