Frequently Asked Questions

In my practice, the following are the most  frequently asked questions.

What is Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a unique system of health care with the goal of treating the root cause of disease via the use of many tools and techniques.  Herbal medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, detoxification, injection therapies and manipulation are common tools in the practice of naturopathy.

What is the Difference Between a  Naturopathic Doctor  and  a Medical Doctor

Naturopathic Doctors are licensed as primary care physicians with prescription rights in the provinces of British Columbia and Ontario.  Naturopathic medicine employs natural therapies and a holistic approach to treatment rather than through the treatment of drugs.  The goal of treatment is to optimize the vitality of the patient first and foremost as opposed to treating disease directly itself.   Proper diagnosis is vital to proper care but the best chance of cure is usually directed to treating the underlying cause of disease as opposed to the disease itself.

Will Naturopathic Medicine Benefit Me

Naturopathic medicine is one of the best ways  to improve overall health and well being in almost any patient.  Many tools used are gentle and of such low risk that they are well tolerated by most patients.

What Can I do Before I See a Naturopathic Doctor to Ensure Best Results

Start by making healthier choices in your eating, sleep patterns and read books on the reading list to get acquainted on how to achieve better health.

What, If Any, Are the Risks of Naturopathic Medicine

Risks of naturopathic medicine are typically very low compared to conventional care.  However, there are some treatments that carry significant risk so it is important that risks vs benefits of any treatment are discussed with your naturopathic doctor.

How Long Will It Take Before I See Improvement to My  Health

Results vary considerably depending on the patient and medical condition.  Healthy patients get better faster and more durably than unhealthy patients.  Minor illnesses tend to respond quite quickly where serious disease benefits most from ongoing care.

Does MSP Cover Naturopathic Care

No, but many extended health care plans have a degree of naturopathic coverage.  To determine whether you are covered, check with your health care plan provider.
